Postwar Life
Powers father John Temple Powers Sr. died in 1904, leaving his mother a widow and him and his three siblings fatherless. He then attended Virginia Tech from 1916 to 1920 when he graduated. His mother Lillie remarried Louis Gruner prior to 1920. However, in 1928 Louis Gruner died, leaving Lillie a widow yet again. John and his wife Gertrude along with their daughter Nancy moved in with Lillie into the same house John grew up in. They remained there with Lillie until she died in 1954.
