Robert Drew Godsey was born on August 17th, 1869 in Scott County, Gate City, Virginia to the parents of James Walker Godsey and Eliza Catherine (Kate) Horton Godsey. Growing up in Washington County, Bristol, Virginia he had nine siblings. He attended VPI as a freshman in 1917, according to The Bugle (VPI Annual), with a major in Agriculture. While a student at VPI, he participated in the Bristol club, Cotillion club, and the Planters club. In 1919, his junior year, he played VPI football as a halfback. Although he filled out both Draft Registration Cards for WWI and WWII as a Naval Reserve. Though there is no information in relation to his service, Robert never graduated from VPI, which could imply that he dropped out in order to serve in WWI. Later Robert worked as a Manager/Operator at a creamery. He married Nancy M. Pendleton Godsey and together they had four children together; Robert D. Godsey Jr., WM D. Godsey, Mary Ann Godsey, and Beverly Godsey.
