Drafted and sent to Camp Lee where he was made a Color Sergeant in the Headquarters Company, 38th Regiment. he entered the third Officers' Training Corps and received his commission in June 1918. Stayed in the infantry replacement camp until July and was then transferred to Camp Custer, Michigan to the 77th Infantry where he was promoted to first lieutenant in November 1918.
