Took exams for regular Army in 1917 and was sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas where he received his commission as Second Lieutenant in Field Artillery. After was was declared he was sent to Camp Green in Charlotte, North Carolina. From there he was sent overseas receiving his first lieutenancy just before leaving. He saw service in France and was promoted to captain.
