            <text>Harry Howard Varner was born in Warrenton, Virginia, on December 18, 1885 to John David Varner and Leila Mortimor Ramey. While attending VPI, Varner participated in many activities such as editor of the “Gray Jacket,” member of the baseball, track, and football teams, business manager of The Bugle, member of fraternities Delta Tau Delta and Phi Rho Sigma, among other clubs, graduating in 1907 with a degree in civil engineering. Varner was also educated at the University of Virginia where he received a B.A. and M.D., and practiced as a physician before entering the service on April 21st, 1917, in New York City. He then served as a medic in the Army. Retiring as a Captain in June of 1919, Varner lead the rest of his life in El Paso, Texas, as a physician, where he died in 1970 of prostate cancer.&#13;
