D.K Smith enlisted in the Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps (SERC) and received his Army aviation badge at Wright Field, a "Flying Sergeant" flight instructor. Served as a military flight instructor at both the Miami and Newport News contracted Curtiss Flight Centers.
