Robert Pendleton noted in his Virginia War History Commission Questionairre that he was cited by "General Pershing for exceptional gallantry at La Rouq Farm on 15 July 1918." 

Full citation reads: "Cook Robert W. Pendleton, Headquarts Troop, 3rd Division for distinguished and exceptional gallantry at La Rocq Farm, on July 15, 1918, in the operations of the American Expeditionary Forces. In testimonty therof, and as an expression of appreciation of his valor, I award him this Citation." - John J Pershing (source: Virginians of Distinguished Service of the World War, published by the Virginia War History commission in 1923, page 128)
