"Stories from the Great War: VPI Men in the Service of Their Country, 1917-1918" Public Lecture at the Salem Museum

Between 1917 and 1918, over one thousand VPI alumni served their country in World War One. "Stories from the Great War" will focus on the stories of nine VPI World War One veterans and their experiences in the last major battles of the Great War.

"The Land of Lost Content: The Great War In Song"

This unique musical evening features reflections on World War I. The Great War affected the lives of many individuals, from classical composers and poets to the singers of music hall ballads.

Prominent on the program will be works of Denis Browne (died at Gallipolli in 1915) and Ivor Gurney (shell shock, never recovered), alongside the U.S. premiere of modern composer Ian Venables' "Through These Pale Cold Days."

 "On the Eve of the Great War"

This performance features stunning music written during the turbulent years surrounding the “Great War,” including music of Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Webern, Hindemith, Boulanger, Kodály, and Foote; composers that were touched by the war in deep ways.

"On the Eve of the Great War" is presented with support from a gift to the School of Performing Arts by Dr. Robert and Mrs. Beverly Williges. 

There will be a brief intermission presentation by "VPI in World War One."
