While at Virginia Tech he played football, baseball, and was on the varsity track team. He also was the leader of the German Club. In the Bugle, it is stated that he developed a hatred for his calling to the military. On his world war draft card it stated he was working at Fort Myer. In the 1940 census he reported he was unable to work.
