Left VPI in 1917 in his sophomore year to attend the first Fort Myer Camp. From there he was transferred to the Coast Artillery Corps training school at Fort Monroe. he received his commission as second lieutenant in May and was immediately sent across to France and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
