John D. Powell’s first wife, Virginia, died of pneumonia in 1920 at the age of 33, leaving him as a widower with three children. He moved to Fort Myers, Florida in 1925 where he began working for the Seaboard Railroad as a civil engineer and contractor. He later married Katherine Wilson Powell in 1933, and they had three more children. When he died in 1971, he had six children, twenty-one grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Postwar Life

Was working for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as a civil engineer in Texas at the time of his registration for the WWI draft in 1916, worked for Seaboard Railroad as a civil engineer and contractor in Fort Myers, Florida in 1925 and beyond
