Cephas Montgomery was a Field Artillery Officer in the First World War who rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant. Widely regarded as a strong public speaker and gifted academic, Montgomery graduated with an A.B. degree from Lynchburg College and obtained both a B.S with honors in agriculture and a M.S in Rural Sociology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Cephas was a both a devote teacher and an active member of the Virginia Tech community for much of his life; being both a member of Alpha Zeta honorary agriculture fraternity, and the Assistant Director of the 4-H Extension Services at V.P.I for 15 years.
